Mead Day with Tacoma's KVLT

Years ago, we were sitting in our local wine bar and Brian walked in. We thought to ourselves, “now here’s a dude that’s busting all of the stereotypes. Let’s go talk to him.” With his long hair and beard, metal band t-shirt, tattoos, nasal piercing and fiercely friendly personality, we couldn’t imagine a more delightful introduction to the usual crowd of people we had there. We’ve spent a lot of time together since then; he’s one of the best people we know.

Then along came Jen and she and Brian made a great match. Their mutual love of all things metal and mead-like converged to create Kvlt Mead. They’re Tacoma’s first meadery, and we think they do pretty awesome things. So, we’re bringing in a selection of their meads for Mead Day, on Saturday, August 3rd.

Mead is a honey-based wine. At its most basic, it’s honey, water and yeast. They run the range of styles, just like beer and wine, and can include things like hops, fruit and spices. If you’re worried that this all sounds a little sweet for your tastes, trust us when we say that we’ve had some meads that rival extra brut champagne!

We will have just four bottles on the 3rd, so when they’re gone, they’re gone. Here’s the lineup:

Of Oak and Soil - Dry. 12% ABV. Charred American oak adds complexity to this aged traditional mead that drinks like a Chardonnay.

Chaos Curse - Dry. 12% ABV. The essence of rosehip dominates the profile in the nose and flavor, tart and apple-like with a wisp of the floral aroma. Fuggles hops build a delicate earthiness and hibiscus adds natural tannins for complexity.

Lord of the Depths - Semisweet. 12% ABV. Dry-hopped with Cascade hops give a delightfully complex floral note on top of the bright notes of clover honey.

Kiss the Demon - Sweet. 12% ABV. An example of a pure traditional mead. Without any other ingredients to get in the way or mask quality, this mead showcases the mild, bright sweetness of the clover honey and the skill of the mead maker.
